You supply the person-power! \nEveryone will go away with a Caring for Community BHHT vinyl sticker and a sense of accomplishment! Students looking for volunteer hours to fulfill graduation requirements are welcome too. \nPlease wear appropriate foot wear\, and bring durable work gloves if you have them. You may also bring water as needed.

He works as a custodian at the Bay School\, where he learned about the art\, and fell in love with the Waldorf style of needle felting. This fall\, Reese will be going into his junior year at UMO studying Ecology and Environmental Sciences with a focus on Marine Ecosystems \nHe is enamored with North American wildlife and ecosystems. You’ll notice that most of his work focuses on recreating their likeness as detailed as possible. In doing so\, he hopes to spread the word of each and every animal’s conservation efforts through his artwork. Reese will also be leading a felt-needling workshop at the Shaw Institute sometime in the winter where he can share his love for the art and the animals he recreates with the community.

SUMMARY:Blue Hill Maritime Heritage Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Shaw Institute team will have some crabs/other marine invertebrates kids can hold as well as some other marine related hands-on activities. \nThe Downeast Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association (TSCA) is proud to host and help sponsor the Festival. The Blue Hill Maritime Heritage Festival is scheduled for Saturday\, August 3\, 2024. We are planning a fun summer day by the bay\, with a lot of maritime and historical related activities: boats\, and boat building demonstrations\, art on the lawn\, sea shanties\, seafood and more. \nThe Festival will be held in Blue Hill’s historic village\, centered on the scenic waterfront. Various activities will be occurring throughout the day\, such as boat building demonstrations\, wood carving\, traditional boats on display\, kiosks of organizations supporting or involved with the bay. On the water there will be more boats\, many offering rides. Musicians will be adding to the maritime atmosphere with sea shanties and fiddle tunes.

DESCRIPTION:Our executive director\, Dr. Charlie Rolsky\, and our Special Projects Manager\, Dani Rodriguez\, will visit the Blue Hill Harbor School for a presentation about the Shaw Institute\, followed by a microscope activity on phytoplankton and harmful algal blooms in the Gulf of Maine. \nWe will provide water samples and have students view the samples under the microscope and identify phytoplankton. Students will leave learning what phytoplankton are and why they’re important to our ecological and human health.

DESCRIPTION:At 6:30 p.m.\, Dr. Charles Rolsky\, executive director and senior research analyst of the Shaw Institute in Blue Hill\, will talk about the impact of plastic pollution on the environment and what we can do to help. He will be preceded by Plastic Pollution Solutions\, a BBWC committee working to decrease the use of single-use plastics\, who will discuss their efforts. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to view Earth Day posters created by area students. Light refreshments will be served. Co-sponsored by the Belfast Free Library. The programs will be held in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library and are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The 4th annual Blue Hill Maritime Festival will now take place on Saturday\, August 5\, 10am-4pm. (Scheduling conflict on 19th) It will be a celebration of Blue Hill’s maritime past featuring traditional small boats\, boat rides and demonstrations\, sea shanties and nautical tunes\, seafood\, ice cream and more. There will be plenty of activities for the little ones. There is no admission fee so everyone can join us for a fun summer day by the bay. The Shaw Festival will on hand to answer questions about our research\, projects and programs.
