SUMMARY:30th Annual NACSETAC Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Shaw Institute’s associate research scientist\, Michelle Berger\, will be on hand to present a poster at this year’s annual conference of the North Atlantic Chapter of SETAC. It will be held at the prestgious Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole on Cape Cod! We expect that there will be ample opportunities for networking\, collaboration\, and knowledge sharing with fellow researchers and professionals from across our region. \nThe Shaw poster explains our process of exploring the sources and extent of PFAS contamination in the town of Surry after it was discovered at the local elementary school.Poster presentations will be on April 11\, from 5pm to 6pm.

SUMMARY:Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition: Planet vs Plastics (part 1)
DESCRIPTION:At 6:30 p.m.\, Dr. Charles Rolsky\, executive director and senior research analyst of the Shaw Institute in Blue Hill\, will talk about the impact of plastic pollution on the environment and what we can do to help. He will be preceded by Plastic Pollution Solutions\, a BBWC committee working to decrease the use of single-use plastics\, who will discuss their efforts. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to view Earth Day posters created by area students. Light refreshments will be served. Co-sponsored by the Belfast Free Library. The programs will be held in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library and are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Plastic Pollution or Climate Change\, Which Threat is Worse?\nCharles Rolsky\, Ph.D.\, and Executive Director and Senior Research Scientist at the Shaw Institute\, will deliver an Earth Day Talk at the School of Marine and Environmental Programs\, at the University of New England. Rolsky’s research background addresses plastic pollution in marine and terrestrial ecosystems as well as green chemistry and sustainable materials science. He currently researches links between environmental contamination and human health\, which includes plastic pollution\, PFAS chemicals\, and other contaminants of concern. Rolsky mentors through a range of internship and educational opportunities at the Shaw Institute.
